Nouvelle Vague, Evil and Dangerous

I just came back from one of the most stirring and sensual experiences I've ever had, a concert by Nouvelle Vague in Uebel & Gefährlich. They were finalement francais, tres chic, golden and gorgeous, lovely and luscious, obercool, übersexy and gewaltig geil. If you missed the concert tonight, then it sucks to be you.

I had never heard of Nouvelle Vague before my last birthday, when brother Carl gave me a DVD full of music, over 3 GB of stuff including their album Bande á Parte, which quickly turned out to be my favorite on the whole enormous disc. During the last two months of my project in Hannover, while we were going through the crunch to complete it after three years, I was listening to Nouvelle Vague over and over again, several times a day to maintain my sanity and keep my soul in peace. And then a few weeks ago, I just about flipped my lid when I found that they would be performing at Uebel & Gefährlich, practically across the street from where I live. Tyler Durden was going to come along, possibly with Marla, but he had to cancel at the last minute when his daughter came down with a serere fever, so my brother Toby jumped in at the last minute, so all was well.

Let's see, what all did they play? Well, I can remember: The Killing Moon, Ever Fallen in Love With Someone (I believe), Dance With Me (I think), Dancing With Myself (with an ass-kicking bass solo), Heart of Glass (with the girls leading the crowd singing "ooh ooh, aw aw"), Human Fly (the girls leading the crowd swaying back and forth like flies), Bela Lugosi's Dead (drop dead fucking awesome, the singer calling for every red light in the room), Fade to Grey, Waves (I think), Sweet & Tender Hooligan, Eisbär (presented as a favor to the German audience, who were invited to sing along, and who did so enthusiastically), Love Will Tear Us Apart, I Just Can't Get Enough (one of the encores with all three girls on stage, an absolute barnburner), In a Manner of Speaking (I think), Guns of Brixton, (This is not a) Love Song), Too Drunk to Fuck (another hell-raiser, in which the girls led the crowd in choruses of "Too drunk, too drunk to fuck"), and Friday Night, Saturday Morning. They also did a few I didn't know, one of them was a cover of Tainted Love (apparently very new, one of the girls was reading the lyrics from a sheet), another where one of the girls sang a solo with the guitar, and yet another where one of them sang a solo with the percussionist.

They finished off the night with another reprise of "Too Drunk to Fuck", which was something like their 19th encore.

My heart was broken at the end of the night when I realized that they didn't play my personal favorite, Escape Myself. Come to think of it, they didn't play Shack Up either, which would have gone over marvelously. I told brother Toby that I was so disappointed that I'd go jump off the roof of the bunker, but what the hell, I was drained, exhausted and delirious, it was all worth it.

Ich möchte ein Eisbär sein
Im kalten Polar
Dann müßte ich nicht mehr schrei'n
Alles wär' so klar

Eisbär'n müssen nie weinen

P.S. If you're one of the people who were overflowing Uebel & Gefährlich tonight, constantly pushing back and forth where I was standing and trying to enjoy the music, then I want you to know that I hate your fucking guts. I don't know why the hell you just can't stay put once the show has begun; or if you must, then everyone push to the front, or to the back, or to one side, but just stay the hell away from the place where I'm standing and leave me the fuck alone.

P.P.S. Especially you two, that couple that was standing just to my left -- if you're reading, you know who you are. You looked like you were having a romantic, cuddly old time, dancing back and forth to the music all night, and I might have done the same if I'd been there with a date. The two of you are probably fucking each other to pieces while I'm writing this, and I can't say that I blame you, but I want you to know that you two Missgeburte fairly ruined an evening that should have been magical and perfect for me. I wanted to get lost in the beauty and passion of it all, and had to endure the two of you banging into my left side most of the evening. Oh how I rejoiced when you two left early. I'm glad you had fun, but show a little consideration to the rest of us who are trying to have a good time. Respect the music, respect the experience, respect your neighbors.

P.P.P.S. Heading off to Malta for four day this week, the taxi's picking me up in about three hours, got to get some sleep, signing off, see ya later.
